Development of Occlusion in Orthodontics: A Comprehensive Review
The development of occlusion is a dynamic biological process influenced by an intricate interplay of genetic, epigenetic, environmental, and functional factors. Contemporary research, supported by advancements in diagnostic technologies and molecular genetics, has moved the field from static morphological descriptions to a dynamic, developmental model. This comprehensive review synthesizes current literature on occlusal ontogeny, exploring critical developmental phases from the pre-eruptive gum pad stage through the maturation of permanent dentition. It examines the multifaceted etiological influences, details the latest diagnostic methodologies, and elucidates the clinical implications for effective early intervention. Special emphasis is placed on preemptive diagnosis and tailored, interceptive therapeutic protocols designed to promote optimal functional stability and aesthetic outcomes in pediatric patients, thereby mitigating the need for more complex orthodontic treatment in the future.
