Audio-Visual Perception of Speaker Traits

This study examines the integration of audio-visual perception in judgments of attractiveness, likability, and personality traits. While previous research suggests that facial features predominantly influence attractiveness ratings, this study investigates whether vocal or facial characteristics are more relevant to assessments of personality and likability. The findings of this study could replicate that facial features primarily influence attractiveness ratings, while it was revealed that vocal characteristics playa more dominant role in shaping perceptions of likability and personality. Using German-language stimuli, acoustic analyses demonstrate that voice quality, temporal aspects of speech, and prosodic variations are most influential when perceiving speaker traits. Findings further indicate that lower-pitched female voices are rated as more attractive, challenging prior research favoring higher pitch in English-speaking contexts. The results underscore the critical role of voice quality, prosody, and speech dynamics in social perception, suggesting cultural variability and social changes in vocal attractiveness preferences. Moreover, the study highlights the integration of auditory and visual cues in holistic perception. The findings have practical applications in human-machine interaction, particularly in the optimization of voice assistants and avatars, as well as in speech training and advertising.
