Mapping Engineering Communications in Canada: Reflections on Year 1

A cross-institutional examination of how different programs achieve the common goal of educating engineering communicators can provide useful models for educators who are developing new engineering communication programs, optimizing their current approach, or looking to integrate communication instruction at a course or assignment-level. However, relying on the literature alone to map differences in curricular models may overlook programs and educators without a strong research profile. This paper shares reflections on a systematic approach to mapping the engineering communication landscape in Canada, via an initial website review, a survey of engineering communication instructors and follow-up interviews. The discussion acknowledges the limits of this more systematic approach and articulates future directions.
