An Open-Source Automated Analysis and Real-Time Active Network Management Tool (RANMAT) for DER Integrated Distribution Networks

Distribution network analysis is vital for network operators, particularly with the increasing deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs). Over the years, various platforms have been developed and automated for this purpose. Some of these platforms are open-source, such as OpenDSS and GridLAB-D, while others, like Matlab/Simulink and ETAP, are commercial and require licenses, limiting their widespread adoption. Traditionally the distribution networks (DNs) have been passive in nature and control was mostly based on prior analysis reaffirming the passive nature. However, modern DNs have become highly active due to smart grid initiatives and the significant penetration of controllable loads and DERs. This shift necessitates the development of proactive analysis and control tools to support active network management (ANM) in DNs. In this context, this paper introduces a novel approach that bridges analysis and control through a tool capable of direct communication with sensors and actuators in DNs. The paper presents an open-source real-time active network management tool (RANMAT) to enable integrated proactive automated analysis and control. The tool is implemented on a Raspberry PI, which hosts the software along with user interface and visualization. Real-time integration is achieved through the Raspberry PI's capability to communicate using the ethernet-based protocol. The main features of the developed tool include automated modeling, real-time analysis, visualization, active network reconfiguration, and voltage control. It is designed to be highly configurable and scalable, allowing the addition of other analysis and control applications as needed by the operator. The tool's analysis and active network management capabilities are thoroughly demonstrated using offline and OPAL-RT-based real-time simulations.
