Mucoid Degeneration of Both Anterior and Posterior Cruciate Ligaments: A Case Report
Abstract Mucoid Degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a rare cause of knee pain unlike meniscal tears, osteochondral defects, and arthritis-related pathologies of the knee joint. Mucoid degeneration of ACL is relatively more common than that of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). There has been only one case reported about the mucoid degeneration of both the ACL and PCL in 2010. Here, we present another case of a 36-year-old female who presented with pain, swelling, and difficulty in walking due to the painful range of motion (ROM). On radiological imaging, especially MRI, arthroscopy, & histopathological examination (HPE), a clinical diagnosis of mucoid degeneration of both ACL and PCL was established. After arthroscopic partial excision and debulking of the ACL and PCL, knee pain was reduced significantly and ROM was regained to near normal.
