Pengaruh Social Comparison terhadap Body Dissatisfaction dengan Kebersyukuran sebagai Moderator pada Emerging Adulthood

Abstract. The increasing phenomenon of body dissatisfaction among emerging adults who use TikTok has become a significant concern. High exposure to unrealistic beauty standards on the platform encourages users to engage in social comparison, although not all individuals experience the same level of comparison or body dissatisfaction. Gratitude is presumed to mitigate body dissatisfaction by helping individuals accept their physical appearance more positively. This study aims to examine the effect of social comparison on body dissatisfaction, with gratitude as a moderating variable. A quantitative approach with a causal design was used, involving 398 participants aged 18–25 years, actively using TikTok, and residing in Bandung City. Data were collected using the INCOM questionnaire (Gibbons & Buunk, 1999) adapted by Putra (2018) for social comparison, the MBSRQ-AS (T. F. Cash, 2000) adapted by Aristantya and Helmi (2019) for body dissatisfaction, and the IGS-10 developed by Rusdi (2021) for gratitude. The results showed an R square value of 0.052, indicating that social comparison has an effect on body dissatisfaction, contributing 5.2%. Gratitude was found to have a direct effect on body dissatisfaction and moderated the effect of social comparison on body dissatisfaction by 7.6%. The type of moderation found was a quasi-moderation, meaning gratitude also functions as an independent variable. Increased body dissatisfaction was associated with low levels of gratitude and high levels of social comparison. High gratitude was found to weaken the effect of social comparison on body dissatisfaction.
