Pengaruh Self-Control terhadap Self-Disclosure pada Emerging Adulthood
Abstract. Social media has become the primary means for young people to interact and express themselves, including through self-disclosure. Instagram's Close Friends feature allows users to share personal information with a limited audience, but still has the potential to encourage oversharing, which can have negative impacts. Self-disclosure on social media is influenced by self-control, namely an individual's ability to regulate thoughts, emotions, and behavior before sharing information. This research is important because previous findings regarding the relationship between the two variables have been inconsistent. The study used a quantitative causality method with 397 emerging adulthood respondents (aged 18–25 years) in Bandung City who actively use the Close Friends feature. The instruments used were a self-control scale based on Averill's (1973) theory and a self-disclosure scale modified by Blau (2011) from Leung's theory. Data analysis was performed using simple linear regression. The results showed a significant positive effect between self-control and self-disclosure (p < 0.05) with a coefficient of determination of 0.417. The higher the self-control, the more selective and directed an individual's self-disclosure behavior. These findings emphasize the important role of self-control in regulating online disclosure of personal information during emerging adulthood.
