Pengaruh Self-Esteem terhadap Perilaku Konsumtif Produk Kecantikan dengan Konformitas Teman Sebaya sebagai Moderator

Abstract. The advancement of technology and the ease of access to online shopping have influenced consumption patterns among female university students, particularly in the purchase of beauty products. This behavior is often driven by the need for self-appreciation and the pressure to conform socially in terms of appearance. Self-esteem plays a role in shaping self-evaluation, while peer conformity serves as a social factor for maintaining group acceptance. This study aims to examine the effect of self-esteem on consumptive behavior of beauty products, with peer conformity as a moderating variable. A quantitative approach with a causal design was used, involving 386 female students in Bandung City selected through convenience sampling. The self-esteem scale (Coopersmith, 1967) modified by (Rahmadhani, 2023), the consumptive behavior scale by Anggraini, (2019) based on angels at al., theory (1994), and the peer conformity scale (Sears, 1991) modified Putri & Syafitri, (2021) based on were used. The results showed that self-esteem had a very weak influence on consumptive behavior (R² = 0.020). However, when moderated by peer conformity, the effect increased significantly (R² = 0.401). The type of moderation found was quasi-moderation, indicating that peer conformity also acts as an independent variable. These findings suggest that social pressure reinforces the consumptive tendency of female students, regardless of whether they have high or low self-esteem. Thus, peer conformity not only moderates but also contextualizes the influence of self-esteem on consumptive behavior, offering a new direction for studies in digital consumer psychology.
