A novel synthetic strategy of spherical magnesium fluoride powders based on magnesium oxide‐polytetrafluoroethylene combustion synthesis reaction

Abstract Monodisperse spherical magnesium fluoride (MgF 2 ) powders with an average particle size of 0.95 µm were synthesized via combustion synthesis using magnesium oxide (MgO) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as reactants. The influence of the MgO/PTFE weight ratios on the phase composition and morphology of the products was investigated, and the formation mechanism of spherical MgF 2 particles was elucidated. The results demonstrated that pure‐phase MgF 2 powders with optimal spherical morphology could be obtained at a MgO/PTFE weight ratio of 4:6. Mechanistic studies revealed that the high‐temperature combustion reaction induced the melting of MgF 2 particles, which subsequently spheroidized under the dual effects of carbon confinement and surface tension, ultimately forming spherical particles upon cooling. This study provides a novel strategy for the preparation of spherical MgF 2 powders.
