Weaving Contractile Bovine Muscle Fibers for Cultured Meat Construction
This study demonstrates a method for fabricating cultured meat by weaving core-shell fibers as micro-units. The core-shell fiber features a cell-adhesive outer shell and a core region loaded with cell-laden medium, supporting cell proliferation and the formation of densely packed three-dimensional tissue. Within the core-shell fibers, muscle fibers were confirmed through the expression of myosin heavy chain and active muscle contraction. By weaving these contractile core-shell fibers using a handloom device, we developed a three-dimensional tissue composed of densely packed unidirectional aligned coreshell fibers. In the future, automation of the weaving process will enable the rapid fabrication of cultured meat with aligned muscle fibers.
