Gas Chromatographic Column with In-Situ Growing Porous Silicon Nanostructures as Stationary Phase Support Layer
This paper proposes a semi-packed micro gas chromatographic column <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$(\mu \text{GCC})$</tex> with in-situ growing porous silicon nanostructures (PSN) as the stationary phase support layer. Compared with the <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mu \text{GCC}$</tex> without the PSN (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mu \text{GCC}$</tex>-noPSN), the mass transfer resistance of the stationary phase is decreased because of the increasing surface area of the alumina stationary phase that is deposited on the PSN, which results in a better separation performance of the <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mu \text{GCC}$</tex> with the PSN <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$(\mu \text{GCC}$</tex>-PSN). The experimental results showed that the minimum theoretical plate height of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mu \text{GCC}$</tex>-PSN was reduced by 67% compared with <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mu \text{GCC}$</tex>-noPSN, and the resolution of n-heptane, n-octane, and n-nonane was improved by 71.3%, 126.0%, and 195.0% by <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mu \text{GCC}$</tex>-PSN, respectively.
