Digital Microfluidic Ionization for Real-Time Miniature Mass Spectrometry
This study presents a novel ion source for direct integration of digital microfluidics (DMF) with a miniature mass spectrometer (mini-MS) for online biochemical analysis. Ion source is structured with double capillary adapted to a spyhole. Key operational parameters are systematically optimized to maximize ionization efficiency and enhance signal intensity. The system shows quantitative capability and a limit-of-detection of 1 ng/mL, comparable to nanospray electrospray ionization (nanoESI). By seamlessly combining the automation and versatility of DMF with the highly sensitive MS, the proposed platform establishes a robust foundation for rapid real-time biochemical assays.
