Layer by Layer Assembly of Alternating Sacrificial Microfluidic Channel Template with Structural Silicone for Multilayer Microfluidic Blood Oxygenator Fabrication
We combine 3D printed sacrificial sugar templates with spin coated structural silicone layers to assemble a multilayer microfluidic oxygenator device with alternating blood and gas channel layers, integrating thin gas exchange membranes between them. Using this technique, microchannels with heights <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\sim 150\mu \mathrm{m}$</tex> and width <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\sim 400\mu \mathrm{m}$</tex> were fabricated. The process is scalable and easy to integrate. Prototype single oxygenator modules were able to increase the blood oxygen saturation by up to 36%, with each layer having a priming blood volume of just 0.15 mL.
