A Short Backfire Antenna Covered with Metasurfaces for Gain Enhancement

This paper presents the design and simulation of a waveguide-fed short backfire antenna (SBF) covered with dielectric metasurfaces (MS) to increase the gain at microwave C -band frequency. The metasurfaces were designed to correct phase errors at the aperture of the SBF using the near-field phase transformation principle. The proposed phase-correcting metasurface layer was configured with unit cells of different sizes. The fundamental unit cell consists of a central cube held by cylindrical rods extending perpendicularly from its sides.

Abstract

This paper presents the design and simulation of a waveguide-fed short backfire antenna (SBF) covered with dielectric metasurfaces (MS) to increase the gain at microwave C -band frequency. The metasurfaces were designed to correct phase errors at the aperture of the SBF using the near-field phase transformation principle. The proposed phase-correcting metasurface layer was configured with unit cells of different sizes. The fundamental unit cell consists of a central cube held by cylindrical rods extending perpendicularly from its sides.
