Visual Feedback System for Rotational Angle Control of a Single Cell Based on Vibration-Induced Flow

Cell rotation technique is beneficial for various fields such as cell biology, medicine or bioengineering. We have proposed a cell rotation method based on a vibration-induced flow. Vibration-induced flow (VIF) is a localized flow generated around microstructures when vibrations are applied to the microstructures. By using VIF induced around micropillars with triangular orientation, horizontal rotation of cells is achieved. However, feedback control of rotational angles of cells have not been achieved by using VIF. In this study, we developed a visual feedback system to control the rotational angle of biological cells based on VIF. As a result, we successfully controlled the rotational angle of microparticles by integrating visual feedback into the system.
