Adaptive Bilinear Filters for Efficient Equalization of Nonlinear Distortions in Optical Communication Systems

We investigate the performance of a traditional equalization technique, adaptive bilinear filter (ABF), for optical communications, and propose a decision-feedback ABF structure. The latter surpasses conventional <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$A B F$</tex> and exhibits better performance than the Volterra DFE.

Abstract

We investigate the performance of a traditional equalization technique, adaptive bilinear filter (ABF), for optical communications, and propose a decision-feedback ABF structure. The latter surpasses conventional <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$A B F$</tex> and exhibits better performance than the Volterra DFE.
