One-Sided Coherent PON

Access systems have traditionally employed asymmetrical link designs, where the central equipment is more complex than the user's terminals. Now that coherent optical transmission is coming into scope of the next generation of passive optical network (PON) systems, we must consider how to design a one-sided coherent link. This paper considers this problem for both the downstream and upstream, and looks to find unique aspects of design that result from the intrinsic properties of the PON.

Abstract

Access systems have traditionally employed asymmetrical link designs, where the central equipment is more complex than the user's terminals. Now that coherent optical transmission is coming into scope of the next generation of passive optical network (PON) systems, we must consider how to design a one-sided coherent link. This paper considers this problem for both the downstream and upstream, and looks to find unique aspects of design that result from the intrinsic properties of the PON.
