Fast Digital Coherent Detection in Optical Communications Enabled by Quaternion Operations

We improved the computational efficiency of digital coherent detection by introducing quaternion operations. The number of multiplications required for MIMO processing was reduced to less than half compared to conventional real-valued and complex-valued arithmetic.
