Material and Dimensional Considerations for Medium-Frequency Transformers

As power density targets and operating frequencies rise, losses in existing core materials increasingly bottleneck achievable power densities in higher-power, medium-frequency (MF) transformers. Addressing this limitation requires the development of new magnetic materials tailored to their specific demands. To this end, we identify key material metrics that govern transformer performance and establish loss-driven guidelines to support the development, selection, and use of magnetic materials for these applications.

Abstract

As power density targets and operating frequencies rise, losses in existing core materials increasingly bottleneck achievable power densities in higher-power, medium-frequency (MF) transformers. Addressing this limitation requires the development of new magnetic materials tailored to their specific demands. To this end, we identify key material metrics that govern transformer performance and establish loss-driven guidelines to support the development, selection, and use of magnetic materials for these applications.
