Preserving Cultural Heritage: Developing an Indonesian Ethnic Group Game through Game Design Document (GDD) using the Game Development Life Cycle and UX Honeycomb Method
Indonesia with cultural diversity of over $\mathbf{1, 3 4 0}$ ethnic groups has its problem of preserving this culture in the midst of globalization. To address these challenges this research seeks to design an educational game that will educate the users on the ethnic groups of Indonesia. The game is developed for mobile platforms with a scarce horizontal scheme of action, correlating stimulating gameplay with effective materials. Regarding the different aspects of the game mechanics, history, and visuals, everything was thought out in detail with the help of the Game Design Document (GDD). The development process followed the Game Development Life Cycle (GDLC), which consists of six phases: It means flowchart with following stages: Initiation, Pre-Production, Production, Testing, Beta, and Release. Finally, the assessment of the user experience of the designed Wikipedia website was performed using the UX Honeycomb model, which indicates such factors as usefulness of the website, comprehensibility, appealing to the user’s emotions, and ease of accessing by people with disabilities. From the feedback which we received from the users during the testing phases, the game was proven to be both entertaining and informative for the players about Indonesia’s ethnic groups. The viewers learned some things about the mission and the issues involved in executing that mission and enjoyed the game aspects at the same time. As a result of this study, the applicability of GDD, GDLC and UX Honeycomb in development of educational games that can preserve cultures is explained for the usefulness in any future educational game development projects.
