Study the effect of flavonoids extracted from thyme leaves on some biochemical variables in the blood serum of female rats with induced atherosclerosis
Flavonoids were extracted from thyme leaves using a Soxhlet device. The separated compounds were characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which showed the identification of a group of phenolic acids and flavonoids (gallic acid, ferulic acid, quercetin, rutin, apigenin, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, at different concentrations respectively (44.90, 30.25, 35.66, 29.80, 26.65, 33.65, 20.58 µg/mg) and their effect was studied after determining the effective dose of (32.4 (mg/kg) on rats with atherosclerosis induced by using Triton X-100 and cholesterol dissolved in coconut oil for two weeks. The results showed that treatment with flavonoids led to a significant increase (P≤0.05) in the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and a decrease in Significant (P≤0.05) decrease in total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and VLDL-cholesterol levels. Significant reductions (P≤0.05) in liver enzymes aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase were also observed.
