Mencius on the Continuity of Moral Development

Abstract This paper examines the Continuity Problem arising from Aristotle's account of habituation and moral development. After reviewing recent attempts to resolve this issue, the paper proposes a solution informed by the ideas of the ancient Chinese philosopher Mencius. It argues that Mencius's understanding of human nature, along with his accounts of self-reflection and moral recollection, provides a satisfying response to the Continuity Problem and offers significant insights into the process of moral development.
