UTILIZATION AND EFFECTIVENESS OF COPING STRATEGIES OF MIGRANT LEARNERS
The study was conducted to assess the coping strategies employed by migrant learners in adapting to their new learning environment. It focused on the level of utilization and extent of effectiveness of the coping strategies employed by migrant learners in adapting to their new learning environment. Differences in their perceptions according to their profile and the relationship between the two variables were also determined. The study used a descriptive-correlational research design using a questionnaire as the main tool in gathering data. Respondents were migrant learners in three selected public schools in Tinoc District in Ifugao. Weighted mean, ranking, t-test, and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation were used to test the data. Findings revealed that migrant learners often perceive the difficulties encountered in their new learning environments as only slightly serious due to their resilience and varying perceptions of challenges. The level of utilization of the identified coping strategies was moderately employed by them, while they perceived that the coping strategies they employed were moderately effective in adapting to their new learning environment. Migrant learners do not differ in their utilization and perceived effectiveness of the coping strategies they employed when sex and clustered grade levels were considered. This is attributed to their limited familiarity and confidence of the migrant learners in the new environment, affecting their utilization of their coping strategies. Moreover, migrant learners have their personal preferences on the coping strategies that affect the level of effectiveness of the coping strategies they employ in adapting to their new learning environment. A strong positive relationship was established between the extent of utilization and level of effectiveness of the coping strategies, indicating that the utilization of the coping strategies is a predictor of their effectiveness and vice versa.
