Knowledge Assessment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome among Healthcare Workers: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract Introduction: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder that significantly impacts public health However, there is a paucity of data on knowledge assessment among healthcare workers on IBS. Hence the current study was conducted to assess knowledge about IBS among health care workers. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional, observational study aimed to assess knowledge about IBS among healthcare workers in India. A pre-validated questionnaire was administered to 288 participants, including medical students, practicing doctors, and paramedical staff. Results: The study revealed that 63.5% of participants had good knowledge (score ≥15/20), while 36.5% had poor knowledge (score <15/20). Urban participants had significantly higher knowledge scores than their rural counterparts ( P < 0.05). Most participants (>90%) were aware of IBS symptoms, the role of diet, and preventive measures. However, sociodemographic factors influencing the disease and various treatment options had the highest rates of incorrect responses (>40%). Conclusion: The study highlights variations in knowledge based on sociodemographic factors, even among healthcare workers. Further research on region-based knowledge, attitudes, and practices is recommended to target knowledge gaps effectively using various information, education, and communication modes. Addressing these gaps can improve the management of IBS patients and reduce the disease’s impact on quality of life and healthcare costs.
