Integrating Urban Morphology and Sustainability: Developing a Spatially Hierarchical Assessment Framework

This research presents an innovative approach to integrating urban morphology with sustainability by developing a spatially hierarchical assessment framework. The proposed framework merges a typological approach with spatial scale classification to create a spatially hierarchical structure, which incorporates six analytical tools derived from the synthesis of morphological layers and sustainable urban form principles. These tools are employed to evaluate the sustainability of urban built forms within an assessment matrix. To validate the model, an empirical analysis was conducted on two districts in Nicosia, Marmara and Çağlayan. The findings demonstrate the critical role of aligning urban morphology with sustainable design to enhance livability and urban quality. This study not only identifies challenges to achieving sustainability but also provides a practical guide for urban planners and designers aiming to create resilient and sustainable cities.
