Phytochemical Investigation of Erinocarpus nimmonii Using FTIR and GC-MS Analysis
Erinocarpus nimmonii, an endemic medicinal plant found in the Western Ghats of India, has been traditionally used for its therapeutic properties. The plant is rich in bioactive phytochemicals, including flavonoids, phenolics, and alkaloids, which contribute to its medicinal value. This study aims to identify and characterize the key bioactive compounds present in the leaf and seed extracts of E. nimmonii using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Ethanolic and cow urine extracts were analyzed to compare their phytochemical composition and bioactive potential. The FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of hydroxyl (-OH), carbonyl (C=O), and aromatic (C=C) functional groups, indicating the presence of polyphenols, flavonoids, and other bioactive compounds. GC- MS profiling revealed the presence of catechol, neophytadiene, tetradecane, squalene, and linoleic acid ethyl ester, which exhibit significant antioxidant, antimicrobial, andanti-inflammatory properties. The findings suggest that E. nimmonii possesses a rich phytochemical profile with potential pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. The bioactive compounds identified in this study highlight the plant's potential as a natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agent, paving the way for future research on its therapeutic applications.
