Two new species of Metuonella Sorgenfrei 1958 (Gastropoda: Neogastropoda) from the Indo-Pacific region: first record in the recent fauna of a genus of probable Tethyan origin

Two new species are assigned to the genus Metuonella Sorgenfrei, 1958, which is provisionally assigned to the family Mangeliidae P. Fischer, 1883, and herein described: Metuonella kitzingeri sp. nov., from the Solomon Islands, and Metuonella skywalkerorum sp. nov., from the Philippines. The new species represent the first Indo-Pacific record of a genus previously known only from the Tertiary of Europe. A probable Tethyan origin for the genus Metuonella is proposed.

Abstract

Two new species are assigned to the genus Metuonella Sorgenfrei, 1958, which is provisionally assigned to the family Mangeliidae P. The new species represent the first Indo-Pacific record of a genus previously known only from the Tertiary of Europe. A probable Tethyan origin for the genus Metuonella is proposed.
