Multi‐performance‐based optimal design method of locally resonant metastructures for structural control

Locally resonant metamaterials (LRMs) have been extensively investigated for wave attenuation; however, the interaction between their bandgaps and a structure's modal dynamics remains relatively unexplored. To address this gap, a design framework is presented to quantify and enhance the structural control performance enabled by LRM-induced bandgaps, focusing on modal energy and maximum structural response. A multi-objective optimization scheme is formulated to investigate and optimize the relationship between local resonance frequency and the dominant mode of the host structure, achieving effective vibration mitigation. In addition, an automated selection process employs a weighted summation of the performance metrics to identify a single, final solution from the multi-objective Pareto set, reflecting the desired balance between different response types. This strategy is experimentally validated using an 8.9-m-span H-beam within a commercial building, demonstrating significant vibration suppression under practical design constraints. Because the underlying mechanisms rely on mass–spring resonance, the framework and findings are broadly generalizable to other metastructures approximated by mass–spring subsystems, offering a versatile solution for advanced structural control applications.
