Effect of vibratory polishing time on EBSD identification rate of Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-1.5Zr-0.3Si powder samples

Abstract EBSD sample preparation of titanium alloys requires no surface stress. In this study, the differences in identification rates of samples after vibration polishing, argon ion polishing and chemical etching at different times were compared. The effect of different vibratory polishing times on the EBSD identification rate of Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-1.5Zr-0.3Si powder samples was investigated. The results showed that 2h of vibratory polishing was sufficient to achieve a flat and scratch-free surface of Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-1.5Zr-0.3Si powder samples, but the EBSD identification rate was too low. When the vibratory polishing time is increased to 4h, the identification rate increases by 36.6 percentage points to 63.7%. When the vibratory polishing time is increased to 8h, the identification rate of EBSD samples reaches 93.7%, and at this time, it is possible that high quality crystallographic information can be obtained. Argon ion polished and chemically etched samples have extremely high identification rates, samples polished by 8 h vibration can achieve the same effect.
