This is an accepted article with a DOI pre-assigned that is not yet published.Genome editing technologies have enabled precise genetic modifications to improve livestock production traits. Myostatin (MSTN), a negative regulator of muscle development, has been a primary target to increase muscle mass and enhance feed efficiency. Findings from the studies on gene-edited livestock targeting MSTN have been reviewed. Various additional candidate genes linked to growth and fat metabolism are reviewed for their potential applications in genome editing strategies aimed at improving meat production. Although these technologies offer significant economic benefits to the livestock industry, ethical considerations, regulatory challenges, and issues of consumer acceptance remain to commercialize gene-edited animals. Continuous advancements in precision editing, along with the development of transparent regulatory frameworks, are expected to facilitate broader adoption of genome-edited animals. This review highlights the potential of genome editing to transform livestock production while emphasizing the importance of balancing technological innovation with social acceptance.
