Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of ZnO Nanoparticles Doped with Ni Synthesized by Biogenic Reduction by Using Moringa oleifera Leaf Extract
Abstract Phytomediated synthesis has gained considerable acceptance in recent years as an alternative to conventional chemical and physical methods, owing to its feasibility, cost‐effectiveness, reliability, and eco‐friendly approach. The present study highlights a facile and rapid phytomediated synthesis of highly photoactive zinc oxide (ZnO) and Ni‐doped ZnO (Ni‐ZnO) nanomaterials using cheap and environmentally benign Moringa oleifera leaf extract. The phytochemicals present in Moringa leaf extract facilitate the formation of nanomaterials without the use of hazardous chemicals as reducing/stabilizing agents. The wurtzite hexagonal crystal structure of the synthesized ZnO and presence of Ni in the doped ZnO were confirmed using X‐ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The morphology and absorption characteristics of the synthesized samples were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV–vis spectroscopy, respectively. The involvement of plant metabolites in the synthesis process was evident from Fourier Transform infrared spectra (FTIR). The green synthesized ZnO and Ni‐ ZnO exhibit photocatalytic activity with natural solar exposure. The extent and progress of pollutant degradation were monitored at regular intervals using UV–Vis spectroscopic techniques. The findings reveal that Ni doping significantly alters the overall properties of ZnO and enhances its photocatalytic performance making it suitable for pollution mitigation.
