MPEG Edgebreaker: An Efficient Static and Dynamic Mesh Codec in MPEG V-DMC
To address the growing demand for compressing dynamic meshes, the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), an international standardization group under ISO, is developing the Video-based Dynamic Mesh Coding (V-DMC) standard. This standard represents a dense original mesh as a sparser base mesh combined with a mesh subdivision scheme and a set of displacement vectors that indicate the disparities between the subdivided base mesh and the original mesh. To efficiently encode the critical base mesh, MPEG has developed the MPEG EdgeBreaker (MEB) codec. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the technical aspects of MEB, focusing on essential encoding tools for both intra-frame and inter-frame coding. Intra-frame coding tools are designed to optimize the compression of individual frames, while inter-frame coding leverages temporal correlations to further enhance efficiency. The paper also compares MEB’s performance with Draco, a well-known mesh compression library. The results demonstrate MEB’s superior efficiency and performance, highlighting its potential as a leading solution for dynamic mesh compression.
