An Intelligent Controller With Improved Power Quality of Boost PFC Converter for Light EV Charger Application
Traditional ACM (average current mode) control for the CCM boost PFC converter, which incorporates LPF (low pass filter) in the voltage loop, encounters challenges such as limited bandwidth and the effect of DLF (double-line frequency) ripple on the reference signal for the current control loop. Additionally, the PI current controller exhibits slow dynamic response near the zero-crossing point, leading to inaccuracies in reference current tracking and causing zero-crossing distortion (ZCD). These challenges result in a low PF, high THD, and slow dynamic performance. To overcome these challenges, this work introduces an intelligent PFC controller that generates quick and high-quality reference current utilizing supply voltage and output power from the power balance equation. This approach mitigates the limitations of a low-bandwidth voltage loop, the DLF effect on the reference signal, and enhances dynamic performance. Additionally, a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-optimized IP current controller is integrated into the proposed dual-loop control structure to minimize reference tracking errors and eliminate ZCD, leading to improved source current power quality and overall performance. The efficacy of the controller is tested in MATLAB software, and experimental verification is done by a 500 W CCM boost PFC converter prototype over a dSPACE DS 1104 real-time control platform.
