Dual-Band Dual-Polarized Stacked Gridded Patch Array With Wide-Angle Scanning Using Sidelobe Cancellation Technique for Smartphones
For the dual-band array with a given array element, the proper element spacing in the lower band and a large element spacing in the higher band usually results in the limited scanning range in the higher band. In this paper, a dual-band dual-polarized stacked gridded patch array with wide-angle scanning for 5G millimeter-wave (mmWave) applications is proposed. To widen the scanning angle in the higher band, the technique of sidelobe cancellation, which applies two additional higher-band elements to counteract the high sidelobe level in the higher band, is proposed. The dual-band element, designed based on the eigenmode theory, is a stacked patch element with gridded lower band patch to cover the 24.25-29.5 GHz and 37-40 GHz frequency band. The additional higher-band element is a traditional stacked patch antenna. The proposed array is constructed with 1×4 dual-band element with an element spacing of 0.47λ<i>L</i> and two higher band elements with an element spacing of 0.5λ<i>H</i>. The size of the array is only 2.3λ<i>L</i> × 0.4λ<i>L</i>. A wide beam scanning range of ± 50° in the lower band and ± 45° in the higher band can be achieved for both H-pol and V-pol. The proposed array, with a compact size and good wide-angle scanning performance, provides a good candidate for dual-band mmWave applications.
