Duelo y pérdida en la época actual: lo que reveló la pandemia
This article is part of a research project that investigates ways of dealing with loss during the pandemic. At that time, death took center stage at the same time that traditional funeral rituals were prevented. The symbolic importance of rituals for the subjectivity of the mourners was evident, as well as the attitudes towards grief in our society. It is argued that mourning processes articulate the intrapsychic elaboration of deaths with a network of sociocultural meanings. For decades, there has been a trend towards the abbreviation of funeral rituals and the emergence of alternative forms. This situation is in line with the social values and ideals of hypermodernity that disregard loss and psychic pain, encouraging productivity. The hegemonic discourse in mental health replicates these imperatives that seek to standardize subjective suffering and annul it through medicalization.
