Structural, electrochemical and theoretical studies of some carboxamides
• Structure-property relationships of carboxamides • Substitution patterns in the molecular structure govern the reduction potential • Carboxamides are a major component of building blocks in living organisms • Direct correlation between experimental reduction potential and DFT energies. In this current work it is explored how substitution patterns in the molecular structure—specifically aromatic versus aliphatic moieties—govern the electron affinity and reduction potential of carboxamide systems. The synthesis, characterization, a density functional theory study of the structure and properties, as well as an electrochemical study of eight carboxamide derivatives, 3-10 , is presented. The reported carboxamides were characterized using UV/Visible, Fourier Transform Infrared, Proton and Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectroscopic data. Structure-property relationships of novel carboxamides as potential redox-active organic molecules.
