Flexible Substrates toward Deformable, Stretchable and Deployable Smart-Skins Integrating Energy-Efficient Active-Antennas Using Correlation Technologies

Flexible, deformable, stretchable and deployable ‘Smart Integrated Electromagnetic Skins’, acting as correlated radiating-cells arranged in arrays that are conformal to the shape of the object they are mounted on, are investigated using innovative multi-physics substrates. New designs and realizations of patterned radiating-cells fed at multiple-points are manufactured and experimentally evaluated using Multi-Feed (MF) Chip-in-Connector (CiC) technologies. One of the critical challenges for such flexible smart skins is that they undergo a variation in their responses when bent, stretched or folded. A self-adjusting flexible smart skin through close-loop adaptive regulation can be implemented by estimating relative field-field correlations between its constitutive elements while their surface and volume experience spatial deformations. In this work, we introduce a new Chip-Package-PCB-Antenna Digital-Twin Co-Design, Co-Simulation and experimental Co-Verification platform combining CST with VISION (IVCAD) tooling backed up by eV-Technologies XWave broadband RLC equivalent circuit representation enabling noiseaware full-transient analysis. The Digital-Twin technology will enable new generations of tooling and instrumentation (unified EDA & OTA) where classical Electromagnetic (EM) metrics (radiation pattern, noise, auto and cross-correlation functions, power-spectral-density) are extended with wireless-circuit key performance indicators (e.g., EVM, SNR, ACPR, NMSE, Entropy). Based on holistic EM-Thermal-Mechanical co-design, the resulting paradigms will foster new functionalized materials engineering for realizing joint communication and sensing systems that can adapt themselves to evolutive surrounding environments.
