A Low-Profile Spiral Antenna Design for Airborne UHF Satellite Communications Systems
A fabricated low profile spiral antenna designed for airborne satellite communications (SATCOM) applications is presented. The antenna is designed to be right hand circular polarized (RHCP) and achieves 3 dB axial ratio to ±60° off main-beam across the UHF Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) frequency band. The fabricated spiral antenna assembly is range tested and power tested to ensure compliance with typical MUOS SATCOM system requirements. Antenna patterns and axial ratio are measured using a spherical near field chamber, and results are shown to closely resemble simulated performance.
