Design of a Compact Implantable Antenna for ISM-Band Biomedical Telemetry
This paper presents the design of a compact implantable antenna for medical devices operating in the 2.4 GHz ISM band. With dimensions of 10.5 × 10.5 × 2.54 mm, the antenna offers simple fabrication and a low Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). The structure comprises a ground plane, a patch, and a superstrate. The superstrate layer is placed on the patch to further reduce the antenna size and isolate it from the external environment. Rogers RO3010 (ε<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">r</inf> = 10.2, tanδ = 0.001) is used as the substrate and superstrate layers. A shorting pin and ground plane slots are utilized to fine-tune the resonant frequency and improve impedance matching, respectively. Simulations are conducted using CST Microwave Studio, with the antenna embedded in a homogeneous muscle tissue model. Finally, the antenna prototype is fabricated and tested in minced pork. Simulation and measurement results show that the proposed antenna is an excellent candidate for biomedical telemetry applications.
