An intelligent adaptive general framework for in-situ integration of nanomaterials in additive manufacturing: toward consistent, scalable, and self-regulated fabrication
Additive Manufacturing (AM) has advanced significantly through the integration of nanomaterials, yet challenges persist in achieving consistent nanomaterial behavior under dynamic fabrication conditions. This study addresses this gap by proposing a theoretical Intelligent Adaptive System (IAS) to enable real-time, scalable, and reliable nanomaterial integration in AM. Using a modular systems-integration methodology, the IAS framework couples real-time data acquisition, predictive control, and dynamic regulation into a recursive feedback loop. The framework incorporates mathematical models informed by literature-derived mechanisms such as thermal instability, flow instability, environmental factors, sensor and monitoring limitations, modeling and prediction gaps, material-interface instabilities, multi-material integration complexity, and real-time adaptation deficit. The derived framework is a logically synchronized system capable of sensing, predicting, and correcting process anomalies during fabrication. This approach directly targets eight critical challenges, namely, Thermal Instability, Flow Instability, Environmental Factors, Sensor and Monitoring Limitations, Modeling and Prediction Gaps, Material-Interface Instabilities, Multi-Material Integration Complexity, and Real-Time Adaptation Deficit. The IAS offers a transformative paradigm for intelligent, adaptive, and sustainable AM, which lays the groundwork for the next-generation of AM systems.
