Production of Polymer Monomers through Integrated Catalytic Approaches
The sustainable synthesis of polymers is of paramount importance, given the energy-intensive nature of their conventional manufacturing processes. The global transition from a traditional fossil-based energy system to one based on renewable sources will significantly impact the polymer industry. In this review, we will summarize the trends in catalytic conversion of traditional fossil feedstocks (coal, petroleum, and shale gas) and emerging feedstocks, including biomass, plastic wastes, and recycled CO2. We will highlight recent efforts to create advanced catalytic systems that selectively convert different feedstocks into monomers. Additionally, we will discuss new research paradigms in catalysis research that focus on interdisciplinary approaches to address the global challenges of achieving carbon neutrality.
