Obituary: Dr. Edoardo Calderini

On Saturday July 19, 2025, Dr. Edoardo Calderini passed away after years of battling a cruel and relentless illness. He was one of the most important figures in Italian Pediatric Anesthesia and Intensive Care. After working for many years as an anesthesiologist and intensivist at the San Raffaele Institute in Milan—devoting himself primarily to the desperate care of AIDS patients (a disease that was incurable and deeply stigmatized in the early 1990s) he continued his career as Head of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Maternal and Child Department at the Policlinico of Milan. There, he earned the esteem of his colleagues, but above all, of his patients and their families. At times critical, but always respectful and grateful toward his mentors, he carried on their scientific and clinical work with great skill and integrity. A man of principle, open to discussion, ironic, and sagacious, he was a guiding figure for the entire Italian pediatric intensive care community. He leaves behind his beloved and esteemed wife, Ida Salvo, herself a prominent figure in Italian Pediatric Anesthesia and Intensive Care. Thank you, dear friend and master.
