Serum cytokines in patients with brain tumor undergoing uncomplicated and complicated postoperative period
Postoperative infectious complications in patients with brain tumors need the earliest detection. Searching for potential laboratory predictors of infectious complications is interesting. Objective. To analyze perioperative markers of systemic inflammatory response in patients with different postoperative periods after resection of subtentorial tumors. Material and methods. The study included 156 neurosurgical patients who underwent surgery for subtentorial brain tumor. They were divided into two groups with uncomplicated postoperative period and infectious complications. Laboratory tests included interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), interleukin-10 (IL-10), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Results. Serum IL-6 in patients with postoperative complications was significantly higher at the stage of hemostasis compared to patients with uncomplicated postoperative period. Serum IL-10 in patients with complicated postoperative period was significantly higher on the first postoperative day. Conclusion. Increased IL-6 at the stage of hemostasis and IL-10 on the first postoperative day after resection of subtentorial tumor may be prognostic factors of postoperative infection complications.
