Sustainable Energy and Resource Management: A Circular Economy Approach to Nitrogen and Bioenergy from Wastewater

Abstract The research focuses on a circular economy model utilizing willow ( Salix spp. ) for household wastewater phytoremediation, in alignment with the European Green Deal and the circular economy action plan. By addressing nitrogen waste reduction through innovative bioeconomy strategies, the study explores sustainable solutions for resource management. Conducted in Nakotne village, Latvia, the research evaluates underground stream wetlands for wastewater treatment, focusing on parameters such as nitrogen and phosphorus removal, energy generation from willow biomass, and CO 2 sequestration. The findings highlight the integration of energy-efficient purification methods with bioenergy production, ensuring compliance with sustainability principles and the promotion of renewable resource utilization.
