NARRATIVES of SECOND-GENERATION BUSINESS OWNERS
Some of the businesses in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, which started many years ago, still operate up to the present, but this time, under the management of second- generation business owners. This research describes the experiences of second- generation business owners in relation to their dreams or aspirations, their business profile, and entrepreneurial practices they used in connection with their vision and in the present economic context. They talked about developments envisioned in relation to their practices, the design of ideal entrepreneurial practices, and how such practices can be implemented and sustained. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the appreciative inquiry model was applied. Using HyperRESEARCH 4.5.7, coding and categorization were applied to the answers of four participants. The instrument, process and data were audited by an expert in the inquiry. The findings, that is, the themes were derived from the data: continuous growth despite on-going problems, dynamism in the business, positive qualities among human resources and value of human resources. The study concludes that second-generation business owners can and often do aspire for continuous growth despite on-going problems, even in the scenario where such growth is only seen as an ideal. They can inculcate and instill dynamism in business through an openness to change in the face of adjusting to new realities of the present generation and those to come. They can acknowledge positive qualities among human resources as vital for implementing and sustaining ideal entrepreneurial business practices.
