Black vs white Mucuna pruriens seeds (Kapikacchu): A comparative evaluation of pharmacognostical, physicochemical, and phytochemical properties
Mucuna pruriens, also known as kapikacchu, is a popular Ayurvedic medicinal plant that has been utilised extensively for its therapeutic effects, especially in the treatment of neurological disorders and reproductive health issues. In this study, its black and white seed variants will be compared pharmacologically, physicochemically, and phytochemically in an initial examination. Both macroscopic and microscopic characteristics are used in pharmacognostical analysis to distinguish between the two seed varieties. To ascertain their quality and purity, physicochemical characteristics like moisture content, ash values, and extractive values were evaluated. The identification of important bioactive substances such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and phenolics was done through preliminary phytochemical screening. The results show notable differences between the black and white seeds, offering information on their potential for therapeutic use and medical benefits. Future investigations into the uniformity and effectiveness of Mucuna pruriens seeds in herbal medicine will be built around this comparative view.
