Quasi‐Static Compression Behavior of Additively Manufactured Surface‐Based Perforated Lattice Structure

ABSTRACT Perforated lattice structures have recently emerged as an exciting paradigm due to their unprecedented mechanical behaviors and promising applications in the fields of aerospace and automation. However, researchers have mostly focused on either triply periodic minimal surfaces or open cell lattice structures. In this study, we present a novel strategy to design a surface‐based perforated lattice structure. The lattice structures, were perforated laterally (along the X ‐axis), axially (along the Y ‐axis), and a combination of both. The samples were manufactured using fused deposition modeling (FDM). Uniaxial static compression test was conducted to determine their mechanical characteristics. Among the perforated lattice structures, X‐1 showed the highest initial peak stress value of 4.43 MPa and the highest energy absorption value of 1864 kJ/m 3 . It also exhibited the smallest Poisson's ratio value of 0.05 due to the perforation geometry. The deformation mechanism reveals that the structural collapse occurs layer by layer. Overall, from this study, the Poisson's ratio of a surface‐based lattice could be reduced at the expense of the mechanical properties. The horizontal elliptical perforation (X‐1) is recommended with the least compromise in the mechanical properties.
