Effect of Inflow Turbulence on Heat Transfer Augmentation With Multihole Sweeping Jet Film Cooling

Abstract Recent developments in turbines motivate researchers to look for efficient cooling technologies. Film cooling is one such widely researched technique. The usage of sweeping jets for film cooling is gaining popularity, given their better performance than steady jets. Although a lot of research exists on sweeping jets, leading-edge film cooling using sweeping jets is yet to be explored in depth. The present study involves 3D-URANS (Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations for various blowing ratios (B.R = 0.5, 0.75, and 1) with mainstream turbulence varying as 0.5%, 5%, and 10% for each case. The study aims to understand the effects of inflow turbulence on the multihole sweeping jet film cooling at the leading edge of a turbine nozzle guide vane. The domain consists of three oscillators with translational periodic boundary conditions on side walls. Adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and turbulent shear stress are used to assess the cooling performance of the row of sweeping jet oscillators. The impact of turbulence intensity on leading-edge film cooling effectiveness is insignificant in the range of parameters discussed in this study. The trends observed in this study agree with existing literature on film cooling.
