Recent Advances in Photoelectrochemical Synthesis of Nitrogen-Containing Solar Fuels and Chemicals
The solar-driven synthesis of nitrogen-containing fuels and chemicals presents a sustainable and promising route for upgrading waste nitrogen sources and reducing reliance on fossil-based processes. Among emerging technologies, photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems offer a unique advantage by integrating light harvesting and catalytic conversion within a single platform. This mini-review highlights recent advances in PEC synthesis of nitrogen-based products, including ammonia (NH3), C–N coupling products such as urea, and more complex organonitrogen compounds via organic synthesis. We summarize key principles, system design strategies, catalytic insights, and the integration of advanced materials. At the end of the review, critical challenges, such as improving performance, understanding reaction mechanisms, developing new reaction systems, and scaling up for real-world applications, are outlined, along with discussions on opportunities for future development. This mini-review provides timely insights into recent advances in PEC technology and supports the expansion of solar fuels and chemicals scope toward high-value, sustainable nitrogen-containing products.
