Clinical effect of two different desensitizing agents on teeth hypersensitivity following in-office bleaching

Abstract Aim Clinical evaluation the effect of two different desensitizing agents on teeth hypersensitivity (THS) following in-office bleaching. Patients and methods Eighteen patients within the age group of 18–30 years were presented with anterior teeth recorded with A2 shade or darker according to “Vita Classical Shade Guide.” All patients were subjected to the same bleaching agent WHITEsmile LIGHT WHITENING AC 32% HP. A split-mouth design was selected, in which the same patient was submitted to two different desensitizing agents as follow: group I: left maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth received WHITEsmile after Whitening Desensitizing Mousse and group II: right maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth received GC’s MI with Recaldent Desensitizing Varnish. Both tested groups were subjected to THS assessments by numeric rating scale and Schiff sensitivity scale in response to an evaporative air-blast stimulus before bleaching (baseline), immediately after bleaching, after application of desensitizing agents, 24 h, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 1 month after bleaching. Results Both tested groups showed statistically significant reduction in THS following in-office bleaching with time throughout follow-up periods as assessed by numeric rating scale and Schiff sensitivity scale parameters. In addition, there was no statistically significant differences between both tested groups from baseline throughout successive follow-up periods. Conclusion Both tested materials demonstrated a promising potential for reducing the incidence and intensity of postbleaching THS and they showed similar clinical efficacy.
